Balseros is a unique film. In the summer of 1994 a team of television reporters filmed and interviewed seven Cubans and their families during the run up to their risky journey across the sea to reach the United States coast. They were fleeing the economic difficulties which were destroying their country. Some time later they managed to locate those who had been rescued at sea in the refugee camp on the North American naval base of Guantanamo. Their families remained in Cuba without any news of them, except in the case of one woman who was shipwrecked and forced to return to the island. Seven years have passed, and the developments in the lives of the various characters are portrayed here in detail and with sensitivity. We observe their lives in America, and the lives of those still in Cuba. This is the story of some of the real survivors of our time. It is a very human adventure of a group of castaways living between two worlds.
